How to Do a Garage Door Balance Test (and Read the Result)

The two-minute test that tells you whether your springs are healthy — step by step, with the safe way to do it.

Quick answer

Close the door, pull the emergency release, lift the door by hand to waist height and let go. It should stay put. If it drops or rises, spring tension is wrong — book garage door spring repair.

This is the most useful two minutes of garage door maintenance, and it is safe if you follow the steps.

Step by step

  1. Close the door fully
  2. Pull the red release cord to disconnect the opener
  3. Lift the door by hand to about halfway
  4. Let go gently and watch
  5. Lower the door and re-engage the trolley by running the opener

Reading the result

  • Stays put: balanced
  • Drifts down: springs weak
  • Drifts up: springs over-tensioned
  • Very heavy: stop — a spring may be broken

When not to do it

If you see a gap in the spring coil or a loose cable, skip the test. See broken spring guide.

How often

Twice a year, ideally before storm season — part of our maintenance checklist.
