Hurricane-Rated Garage Doors for Florida Homes
Wind-load and impact-rated doors, Miami-Dade NOA products where the county requires them, permits filed and inspections met — because the garage door is the opening that fails first.
Why the garage door decides how the rest of the house does
In a wind event the garage door is the largest, thinnest, least-supported surface on the building. When it fails, wind enters the structure and pressurises it from inside — pushing outward on the walls and upward on the roof at the same time as the storm pushes in. A large share of catastrophic residential damage in Florida hurricanes starts with a garage door breach, not with the roof.
A hurricane-rated door resists two separate things: sustained and gusting pressure (the wind-load rating, expressed in pounds per square foot for a design wind speed), and impact from windborne debris (tested by firing a timber missile at the panel, then cycling pressure). A door can be rated for pressure and not for impact. In Miami-Dade and Broward's high-velocity hurricane zone, openings generally need both, or protection.
What a compliant installation involves
- Design pressure determined for your address, exposure and opening size
- Product with a current approval — Miami-Dade NOA or Florida Product Approval — matched to that pressure
- Correct reinforcing struts, heavier track and end-stile hardware
- Jamb fixings and anchor pattern exactly as the approval specifies — this is where most non-compliant installs fail
- Permit, inspection and documentation retained for your insurer

Signs your current door is not storm-ready
No struts across the panels
If you cannot see horizontal reinforcing bars on the inside face, the door is unlikely to be wind-rated.
No approval label
Rated doors carry a label or data plate with the manufacturer, model and approval number.
Visible flex in a squall
A door that bows inward under ordinary gusts is already past its pressure limit.
Pre-2002 installation
Florida Building Code requirements changed substantially. Older doors were often never rated at all.
Corroded end stiles or brackets
Rated performance assumes intact hardware. Rust at the bottom brackets voids the assumption.
Temporary bracing kits only
Post-and-brace kits help but need installing every time and are not equivalent to a rated door.
What the visit looks like
Assess and calculate
We identify your wind zone, exposure category and required design pressure for the opening.
Specify an approved product
A door with a current NOA or Florida Product Approval that meets or exceeds that pressure, in the style you want.
Permit and install to the approval
Anchor pattern, struts and hardware exactly as the approval documents require — no substitutions.
Document for the inspector and insurer
Approval numbers, permit close-out and photos, handed to you as a file.
What rated doors cost — and what they save
A rated door is a premium over a builder-grade one. Set against the mitigation credit on your windstorm premium and the deductible on a breach, the maths is usually short.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Design pressure required | Coastal and high-velocity zones demand heavier construction and hardware. |
| Impact rating | Impact-rated doors and glazing cost more than pressure-only products. |
| Opening size | Double doors carry far higher total load than singles and need proportionally more reinforcement. |
| Glazing | Impact-rated windows in a full-view or window-section door are a significant line item. |
| Structural preparation | Jambs and headers must be able to take the specified anchors; remedial carpentry is quoted separately. |
| Insurance offset | Many Florida windstorm policies offer opening-protection credits when all openings are rated. Ask your carrier what documentation they need. |
Every job is quoted in writing on site before work starts. Ranges given by phone are estimates until a technician sees the door.
Where NOA is required and where it is accepted
Miami-Dade and Broward counties form the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, with the strictest product-approval regime in the country. Palm Beach, Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Sarasota and Manatee counties work to Florida Product Approval with address-specific design pressures. A Miami-Dade NOA product is accepted everywhere in the state; the reverse is not true. When in doubt we specify to NOA. Read the plain-English version in our guide to Miami-Dade NOA and garage doors.
