Garage Door Lubrication Guide: What, Where and How Often

The right lubricant, the eight points that need it, and the common mistake that makes doors noisier.

Quick answer

Use a silicone or lithium garage-door lubricant on hinges, roller bearings, spring coils, bearing plates and the opener rail every six months. Do not lubricate the tracks or use WD-40. If noise persists, book garage door repair.

Most noisy doors are thirsty doors. Five minutes with the right spray makes a big difference.

The eight points

  1. Hinges
  2. Roller bearings (not the wheels)
  3. Torsion spring coils
  4. End bearing plates
  5. Centre bearing
  6. Lock mechanism
  7. Opener rail (chain or screw drives)
  8. Top of the weather seal (silicone only)

What not to use

  • WD-40 — a cleaner, not a lubricant
  • Heavy grease — collects sand and grit
  • Anything on the tracks
