Quick answer
A blinking sensor light almost always means the two photo-eyes cannot see each other: misalignment, a dirty lens, sun glare or damaged wiring. Realign and clean first; persistent faults need garage door opener repair.
The safety sensors sit about six inches off the floor either side of the door. Their indicator lights tell you their status.
Reading the lights
- Both steady: aligned and working
- Receiver blinking or off: beam broken or misaligned
- Both off: no power — wiring or board
Some brands also flash the opener light in a code.
Realigning
Loosen the wing nut, aim the receiving eye at the sending eye until its light goes steady, then tighten. Wipe both lenses.
Florida culprits
Humidity corrodes the thin low-voltage wire and staples; lawn equipment knocks brackets; low sun blinds the receiver. See why doors reverse.
When to replace
Cracked lenses, corroded connectors or intermittent faults after realignment mean new sensors — a quick garage door repair.
