Quick answer
If you heard a bang, it is almost certainly a broken spring — leave the door closed and book garage door spring repair. If the opener shows no lights, check power and the breaker; if it hums, suspect the gear or a disconnected trolley.
A door that will not open strands cars and blocks deliveries. Five quick checks tell you which kind of problem you have.

Check 1: Did something bang?
A torsion spring breaks with a gunshot-like crack. Look at the shaft above the door for a gap in the coil. Do not lift the door. Read what to do when a spring breaks.
Check 2: Power and lock
No lights on the opener means power, breaker or GFCI. A lit console in lock mode ignores remotes.
Check 3: Listen to the motor
- Humming, no movement: stripped gear or trolley disengaged
- Clicking: capacitor or logic board
- Lifts a few inches then stops: spring or force limit
See garage door opener repair.
Check 4–5: Manual release and tracks
With the door closed, pull the release and try lifting gently. If it is impossibly heavy, stop — springs. If it binds, the track or rollers are at fault. More in opening a garage door without power.
