How to Program a Garage Door Remote or Car Button

Learn-button programming, HomeLink pairing and the reasons a remote refuses to pair.

Quick answer

Press the opener's learn button, then press the remote button within about 30 seconds until the opener light flashes. Car buttons use a similar learn sequence. If pairing fails, check the battery and opener compatibility — or book garage door opener repair.

Remotes need re-pairing after power events, board replacements or when adding new devices.

Standard remotes

  1. Find the learn button on the motor head
  2. Press and release it
  3. Within 30 seconds, press the remote button
  4. The light flashes or clicks to confirm

Car HomeLink

Pair the car button to a handheld remote, then use the opener's learn button. Some rolling-code openers need a bridge.

Clearing old codes

Hold the learn button until the LED goes out to erase all remotes — useful after moving in. See ghost openings.

When it will not pair

Weak battery, wrong frequency, or a failed receiver — remote troubleshooting.
