How to Test Your Garage Door's Auto-Reverse

The two monthly tests that confirm your door will stop and reverse — and what to do if it fails.

Quick answer

Monthly: place a 2×4 flat under the door and close it — it must reverse on contact. Then wave an object through the sensor beam while closing — it must reverse. If either fails, stop using the opener and book garage door opener repair.

Two simple tests confirm your door will not crush anything.

Contact test

  1. Lay a 2×4 flat in the door path
  2. Close the door
  3. It must reverse within two seconds of touching

Photo-eye test

Pass a broom through the beam while closing.

If it fails

Check sensors — sensor guide — then force settings.

Do not adjust force blindly

See reversing guide.
