Garage Door Stuck Halfway: Safe Steps Before You Call

What to do — and not do — with a door that has stopped part-way, including when to pull the release.

Quick answer

Leave a half-open door where it is, keep people out from under it and unplug the opener. Only pull the manual release if the door is not heavy or crooked. Otherwise call emergency garage door repair.

A door that has stopped partway is either blocked, out of balance or the opener has hit a limit. Your next move depends on which.

Safe first steps

  1. Keep everyone and vehicles clear
  2. Unplug the opener
  3. Look for obvious obstructions in the tracks
  4. Look up: a gap in the spring coil means do not touch

When the manual release is safe

Only if the springs are intact and the door is level. Hold the door before pulling the cord — it may drop. See using the manual release.

Common causes

  • Broken spring
  • Cable off its drum
  • Roller jammed in a bent track
  • Opener travel limit or logic fault

Getting it fixed
