The garage door is the largest, thinnest, least-supported surface on a typical Florida home, and it is the opening most likely to fail in a hurricane. Understanding what "hurricane rated" actually means is worth twenty minutes of anybody's time before June.
Two ratings, two different tests
Wind-load (design pressure) measures resistance to sustained and gusting pressure, expressed in pounds per square foot for a design wind speed at your address, exposure and opening size. Impact rating measures survival of windborne debris: a timber missile is fired at the panel, then the assembly is pressure-cycled thousands of times to confirm it still holds.
A door can be pressure-rated and not impact-rated. In the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone — Miami-Dade and Broward counties — openings generally need impact protection as well as pressure resistance.
Why a breach matters so much
When a garage door fails, wind enters the structure and pressurises it from the inside. The walls are then pushed outward and the roof structure upward at the same moment the storm is pushing in. A large share of catastrophic residential losses in Florida hurricanes begins at the garage opening, not the roof.
Where NOA applies and where Florida Product Approval does
Miami-Dade and Broward operate the strictest product-approval regime in the country; a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance is the practical standard. Palm Beach, Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Sarasota and Manatee work to Florida Product Approval with address-specific design pressures. An NOA product is accepted statewide; a Florida-approved product is not automatically accepted in the HVHZ. When in doubt, specify to NOA.
What a compliant installation involves
- Design pressure calculated for the address, exposure and opening size
- A product with a current, matching approval
- Correct reinforcing struts, heavier track and end-stile hardware
- The anchor pattern exactly as the approval specifies — the most common point of failure in non-compliant installs
- Permit, inspection and retained documentation
Bracing kits and strut retrofits are better than nothing on an existing door, but they do not turn an unrated door into a rated one and are rarely accepted for code compliance or an insurance credit.
Insurance and documentation
Many Florida windstorm policies offer an opening-protection credit when every opening in the home is rated — and the garage door is frequently the one that disqualifies an otherwise compliant house. Keep the approval number, the permit close-out and photographs of the installed data plate. That is the package a carrier asks for.
The short version: Pressure rating and impact rating are different tests, both usually needed in Miami-Dade and Broward. The approval number and the anchor pattern matter as much as the door. Document everything — your insurer will ask.
