Quick answer
Nine times out of ten a door that will not close has blocked or misaligned safety sensors. If the sensors are fine, check the lock mode, travel limits, tracks and springs — or book garage door opener repair.
A door stuck open leaves the garage and often the house exposed, so this is one of the most urgent calls we get. Work through these checks in order.

1–3: Sensors, obstruction and lock
- Photo-eyes: both lights should be steady. Wipe lenses, clear the beam, realign — see garage door sensor light blinking.
- Obstruction: anything in the track or under the door.
- Lock mode: a locked wall console disables remotes.
4–6: Limits, force and remote
- Close limit set too short — the door stops high.
- Close force too low for a binding door — it reverses.
- Remote battery or pairing — test the wall button.
7–9: Mechanical faults
- Bent or misaligned track
- Broken spring or cable — the door is too heavy for the opener
- Stripped opener gear — the motor runs, nothing moves
These need a technician: garage door repair or garage door spring repair.
