Miami-Dade NOA and Garage Doors: A Practical Guide

What a Notice of Acceptance actually covers, where it is required, and how it shows up on your permit and inspection.

If you are replacing a garage door in Miami-Dade or Broward, the phrase "NOA" will appear on your quote, your permit and your inspection. Here is what it actually is, in plain language.

What an NOA is

A Notice of Acceptance is a product approval issued by Miami-Dade County's product control section. It certifies that a specific product — a specific door model, in specific sizes, with specific hardware and a specific anchor pattern — has passed the county's testing programme, including large- and small-missile impact and pressure cycling.

Crucially, the NOA is not a badge attached to a brand. It applies to a configuration. A door model may be approved up to a certain width and design pressure; beyond that, a different product or a different reinforcement is required.

Where it is required

The High-Velocity Hurricane Zone covers Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Openings there require approved products, and the NOA is the standard route. Elsewhere in Florida, Florida Product Approval governs, with address-specific design pressures. NOA products are accepted statewide, which is why we frequently specify to NOA even outside the HVHZ.

How it shows up on your project

  • On the quote: the model, the approval number and the design pressure it is approved to.
  • On the permit: the NOA number is filed with the application, along with the anchor detail.
  • On site: the installer must follow the approval's anchor pattern and reinforcement schedule exactly.
  • At inspection: the inspector checks the installed product against the filed NOA — including the data plate on the door.

How to check an NOA yourself

NOAs are public and searchable through Miami-Dade County's product control records by manufacturer, product category or approval number. Two things are worth verifying: that the NOA is current and not expired, and that the size and design pressure of your opening fall inside the approved range. Any reputable installer will give you the number without hesitation.

Common ways installations go wrong

  • Correct door, wrong anchors — the most common compliance failure we are asked to remediate.
  • Struts omitted or under-specified on wide doors.
  • An expired NOA on an old stock product.
  • An opening wider than the approved configuration, without the specified reinforcement.
  • No permit at all — which surfaces later at resale or at claim time.

The short version: An NOA approves a configuration, not a brand: model, size, design pressure, hardware and anchor pattern together. Get the number, check it is current and covers your opening, and make sure the installer follows the anchor detail.

Questions people also ask

Is an NOA the same as a hurricane rating?
It is the Miami-Dade route to proving one. Elsewhere in Florida the equivalent is a Florida Product Approval with an address-specific design pressure.
Does my whole house need NOA products?
In the HVHZ all openings need approved products or protection. Garage doors are frequently the last opening to be upgraded.
Can you install an NOA door outside Miami-Dade?
Yes, and we often do — an NOA product is accepted anywhere in Florida.
Do I get paperwork at the end?
Yes: the closed permit, the NOA documentation and photographs of the installed data plate. Keep them for your insurer and for resale.
