Springs do the lifting — the opener only steers

This is the single most misunderstood thing about garage doors. The opener does not lift the door; the springs do. The opener supplies about a tenth of the force, guiding a door that the spring system has already counterbalanced to near-weightlessness. When a spring breaks, the opener is suddenly asked to lift several hundred pounds, which is why a broken spring so often takes the opener with it a few weeks later.

A standard spring is rated for around 10,000 cycles — roughly seven years at four openings a day. Florida's coastal air shortens that considerably: corrosion pits the wire, and a pitted spring fails early and without warning. If your springs are original and the house is more than a decade old, they are living on borrowed time.

Why springs are replaced in pairs

Two springs on the same door have done the same number of cycles and are the same age. Replacing only the broken one leaves you with a second failure — and a second service call — usually within months, on top of an unbalanced door that wears the drum, cables and opener unevenly. We replace both, matched to the measured weight of your door.

Diagnosis

How to tell a spring has gone

01

A gunshot-like bang

Torsion springs release their stored energy in one crack, often heard from inside the house at night.

02

A visible gap in the coil

Look at the shaft above the door: a two-inch gap in an otherwise continuous coil is a broken torsion spring.

03

The door lifts a few inches and stops

The opener has hit its force limit against an uncounterbalanced door.

04

The door slams down

Without spring tension the door falls under its own weight. Keep people and vehicles clear.

05

It feels impossibly heavy by hand

A balanced door should hold at waist height with the opener disconnected. If it drops, tension is wrong.

06

Rust, flaking or pitting on the coil

Coastal corrosion. A pitted spring is a failure waiting for a date.

Our process

What the visit looks like

01

Weigh and measure

Wire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction — plus the door's actual weight, not a guess from the model number.

02

Matched replacement set

New springs in pairs, cycle-rated for how you actually use the door. Galvanised where the salt air demands it.

03

Re-balance the door

Set correctly, the door holds anywhere you leave it with the opener disconnected.

04

Reset opener force and test

Force settings and safety reverse re-checked and cycle-tested before we leave.

Pricing

What a spring job costs

Spring work is priced by what the door needs, not by the door count. These factors set the number.

FactorWhy it matters
Torsion or extensionTorsion systems (shaft above the door) and extension systems (springs along the tracks) use different parts and labour.
Door weight and widthSingle, double, insulated and solid-wood doors need different wire sizes and sometimes a heavier shaft.
Cycle ratingStandard 10,000-cycle versus high-cycle 20,000–25,000 sets. High-cycle costs more once and lasts about twice as long.
Coastal specGalvanised or powder-coated springs and stainless fixings for homes near the water.
Collateral damageA spring that broke under load sometimes takes cables, a drum or the opener gear with it.

Every job is quoted in writing on site before work starts. Ranges shown by phone are estimates until a technician sees the door.

New matched torsion spring set installed on a residential garage door

Why we push high-cycle springs on the coast

Between salt air and Florida's year-round usage — no winter month where the door barely moves — standard springs rarely reach their nominal life within a few miles of the water. A high-cycle galvanised set is usually the cheaper decision across ten years, and it is what we fit by default in coastal Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Lee, Collier and Sarasota neighbourhoods.

FAQ

Garage Door Spring Repair — questions we get asked

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
We strongly advise against it. A torsion spring holds enough stored energy to break bones, and winding bars, correct wire sizing and proper balance are not improvised safely. This is the repair that sends DIYers to the emergency room.
How long does spring replacement take?
A standard matched torsion pair on a residential door takes about 60 to 90 minutes including balancing and testing.
How long do new springs last?
A standard set is rated for roughly 10,000 cycles — about seven years at four openings a day. A high-cycle set doubles that. Coastal corrosion is the main variable.
My door still will not open after the spring was replaced. Why?
Usually the opener: it may have burned out its gear or logic board while fighting the failed spring, or its force settings need resetting for the new balance. We check both as part of the job.
Do you replace cables at the same time?
If the cables are frayed, kinked or the same age as the failed spring, yes — we quote them with the spring set rather than coming back for them.
Is a broken spring covered by my home warranty?
Sometimes. We provide itemised documentation with part specifications, which is normally what a warranty administrator asks for.
